(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet tasked relevant ministries, institutions, and authorities in seven provinces bordering Thailand to provide essential services and coordination for Cambodian migrant workers seeking to return home.
In a voice message broadcast on social media on Monday morning (Jun. 16), Samdech Thipadei instructed Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to work with Cambodian consulates in Thailand to facilitate the necessary documentation for migrant workers lacking proper papers to cross the border.
The premier also directed Heng Sour, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, to prepare information and employment placement services for those returning.
Additionally, Sar Sokha, Minister of Interior, was instructed—along with the General Department of Immigration and governors of provinces bordering Thailand—to prepare the logistics required to transport returning workers.
It is worth noting that amidst ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, some Thai nationalists have threatened Cambodian migrant workers, urging them to leave the country. These nationalist sentiments have also led to acts of discrimination against Cambodian workers.
