(Preah Vihear): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, publicly revealed that former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, sister of Thaksin Shinawatra, used a Cambodian passport to escape Thailand and take refuge abroad. He stated this was done with his assistance.

Speaking at a meeting with local council members in Preah Vihear province on Friday (Jun. 27), Samdech Techo said he had refrained from disclosing this information out of respect, but was compelled to speak after repeated personal attacks from current Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

He stated, “I pitied Yingluck. She still holds a Cambodian passport and resides overseas. But she’s suffering because of her brother, and now again because of her niece. I didn’t want to speak out—but I must. When the vehicle transported Yingluck out of Poipet, it coincided with her flight from Singapore to Siem Reap. The plane landed, and she immediately got in the car. Today, the truth comes out.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen clarified that Cambodia did not use its territory to act against Thailand, but rather acted out of compassion and humanity.

He said, “I regret that a 30-year friendship was destroyed by a friend's daughter,” referring to Paetongtarn, while expressing frustration over what he sees as her repeated attacks. He added, “The Thai prime minister may insult her own military, but she cannot insult me.”

For context, Yingluck Shinawatra was Thailand’s 28th Prime Minister and the country’s first female head of government, elected in 2011. In 2014, she was overthrown in a military coup after being accused of abuse of power and corruption. The Thai Supreme Court later sentenced her to prison, but she fled the country before sentencing. On 26 August 2017, senior members of her political party confirmed that she had fled Thailand about a week prior and was residing in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
