(Phnom Penh): The Russian Embassy in Cambodia hosted a state reception to celebrate Russia Day at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel on 11 June 2026, bringing together senior Cambodian officials, diplomats, business leaders, academics, and members of the Russian community.

In his welcoming remarks, Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik described Russia as a unique space uniting Europe and Asia, with diverse cultures, traditions, and civilisations. He highlighted the significant contributions of Russia’s multi-ethnic people to global science and culture.

The ambassador emphasised that Russia’s foreign policy places special importance on strengthening relations with countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, while consistently advocating the principles of sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and opposition to neo-colonialism.

Ambassador Borovik noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Phnom Penh.

“Over the past seven decades, we have managed to build strong ties of friendship, mutual respect and trust, which have successfully withstood the test of time and changes in the international landscape. Today, Russia-Cambodia cooperation continues to develop steadily across a wide range of areas,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the upcoming commemorative ASEAN-Russia Summit, scheduled for June 18 in the city of Kazan, would serve as another milestone in strengthening cooperation between Russia and ASEAN.

Representing the Royal Government of Cambodia as Guest of Honour, Ly Thuch, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission and First Vice-President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority, highlighted the Soviet Union’s important role in Cambodia’s development, particularly in training Cambodian specialists across various sectors.

He also underscored the strong cultural bonds between the peoples of Cambodia and Russia, noting that these ties help foster a relationship based on mutual trust and dialogue.

The event was held in a warm and festive atmosphere, with guests enjoying popular Russian songs and traditional Russian cuisine. A photo exhibition titled “Cambodia Through the Lens of Russian Diplomats,” organised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Russia, attracted particular interest from attendees.
