(Kazan): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held a working meeting with Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), on the sidelines of the 35th ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, held in Kazan, Russian Federation.
During the meeting, the SCO secretary general expressed his satisfaction with the close cooperation between the SCO and Cambodia across various sectors over the years. He also recalled the deployment of the SCO Election Observer Mission to observe Cambodia’s 2023 National Assembly elections.
In response, Samdech Thipadei highly valued the excellent cooperation between Cambodia and the SCO and expressed his sincere appreciation to the organisation for sending election observers to observe Cambodia’s previous elections.
The premier underscored that the presence of SCO election observers played a vital role in demonstrating the fairness, transparency, and vibrancy of democracy in Cambodia. In this regard, he expressed confidence that the SCO would continue to send election observer missions to Cambodia for the 2027 Commune/Sangkat Council Elections and the 2028 National Assembly Elections.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei and the secretary general also discussed ways to further strengthen and expand cooperation in the fields of tourism and security.
Regarding the tourism sector, the secretary general informed Samdech Thipadei that the SCO would organise an upcoming tourism event in Hainan Province, China, and invite Cambodia to participate. Such participation would provide Cambodia with an opportunity to showcase its tourism potential and investment opportunities to senior government representatives, business leaders, and representatives of international organisations from numerous countries.
In the security sector, Samdech Thipadei underscored that security cooperation is of paramount importance and requires close collaboration.
In this regard, the SCO fully understood these critical needs and has established specialised working groups dedicated to security, combating transnational crime, human trafficking, and cybercrime. He further noted that the exchange of information and the sharing of experiences would help strengthen cooperation in the security sector, making it more effective and resilient.
