(Phnom Penh): Cambodian National Assembly on Tuesday (Jul. 14) approved the appointment of an additional member of the Royal Government and passed four draft laws aimed at strengthening Cambodia's legal framework and enhancing regional economic integration, trade, and investment.
The decisions were made during the Sixth Session of the Seventh Legislature, chaired by Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, at the National Assembly Palace.
The National Assembly voted to approve the appointment of Prak Sam Oeun as Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission with 108 votes in favour and two abstentions from Members of the National Assembly present.
Lawmakers also unanimously approved four bills, each receiving 110 votes in favour, namely:
1- The Draft Law on the Approval of Cambodia's Accession as a State Party to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and the Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment.
2- The Draft Law on the Approval of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Mutual Recognition Arrangements.
3- the Draft Law on the Approval of the ASEAN Sectoral Mutual Recognition Arrangement for Building and Construction Materials.
4- the Draft Law on the Approval of the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Type Approval for Automotive Products.
The newly adopted laws are expected to strengthen Cambodia's legal framework, deepen regional economic integration, and facilitate trade and investment in line with ASEAN commitments.
Cambodia's accession to the Convention on International Interests in mobile equipment and its aircraft protocol is expected to strengthen the legal framework for civil aviation, reduce aircraft leasing costs, facilitate fleet expansion, and improve access to international aviation financing.
Meanwhile, the three ASEAN agreements will facilitate the free movement of products within the ASEAN market, strengthen the capacity of Cambodia's certification, testing, and inspection bodies, reduce duplication in conformity assessment procedures, and promote fair trade and transparent competition.
Following their approval by the National Assembly, the four bills will be sent to the Senate for review. If approved, they will proceed to promulgation in accordance with the constitution.
