(Phnom Penh): Interior Minister Sar Sokha requested Prime Minister Hun Manet to reinstate strict enforcement of Road Traffic Law beginning 1 September 2026, following a worrying rise in road accidents.

The stricter enforcement campaign had been suspended due to the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict and the global economic challenges stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.

According to Minister Sar Sokha's proposal, the renewed enforcement campaign will primarily target areas with high rates of traffic accidents, including Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk Province, Kandal Province, Kampong Speu Province, and Svay Rieng Province.

The enforcement will focus on serious traffic violations that contribute to severe accidents, including speeding, drunk driving, running red lights or violating right-of-way rules, and transporting oversized or improperly secured cargo in breach of technical regulations.

Minister Sar Sokha said the proposal comes in response to the alarming rise in traffic accidents since the suspension of stricter enforcement.
