JAKARTA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian corruption court handed down on Tuesday a 15-year-sentence to the country's former house speaker over a corruption case.

Setya Novanto, who was also a former chairman of the country's second biggest Golkar Party, was found guilty of rigging 5.9 trillion rupiah (some 424 million U.S. dollars) from the electronic identity card (e-ID) project, presiding judge Yanto said.

"The court sentences 15 years jail term," the judge said at a court session in Jakarta, adding that Novanto is also obligated to pay fine of 7.3 million U.S. dollars.

The graft case caused 2.3 trillion rupiah (some 172.8 million U.S. dollars) financial loss, according to the court.

According to the cuntry's anti-corruption watchdog, Novanto allegedly intervened in planning scheme in the project which gives room for corrupting the funds.

Novanto said that he would wait a week before announcing whether to file an appeal.
