Phnom Penh (FN), May 4 – Pauline Tamesis, Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative to Cambodia, acknowledged that landmines issue in Cambodia really affected Cambodia's economy and society, especially the economic development and poverty reduction of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Meeting with Ly Thuch, First Vice President of Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) on Friday, Pauline Tamesis vowed to seek assistance, especially urging States Parties of the Ottawa Convention, donor countries, and development partners to further strengthen mine action in Cambodia.

In response, Senior Minister Ly Thuch informed Pauline Tamesis the efforts of the Royal Government of Cambodia under the wise leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen in implementing the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Ottawa Treaty) as a signatory state and for the sake of Cambodian people.

Senior Minister urged operators to effectively spread awareness on the dangers of landmines and explosive remnants of war in the operation areas to further prevent future victims of landmines, particularly regions of highly populated children.

Senior Minister, on behalf of Prime Minister, thanked Pauline Tamesis and her colleagues for their valuable time and commitment to understanding and assisting mine action sector in Cambodia.
