Phnom Penh (FN), April 24 – A senior official of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) told the press in the evening of April 24, that the party is in consideration of lodging a legal complaint against an NGO leader for his remarks that the CPP is setting up the alleged sexual scandal implicating deputy leader of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), Kem Sokha and a young woman Khom Chandarati, known by her social media nick name as Srey Mom.
Sok Eisan, spokesperson of the CPP, said Ou Virak, Chairman of a political think tank, the Future Forum, is painting a black picture of the CPP with a view to misleading or confusing the public about the party. This act has caused harm onto the reputation of the CPP which is the legitimate ruling party.
Ou Virak said on Radio Free Asia today, April 24, the ongoing extra-marital affairs scandal between Kem Soka and Srey Mom was set up by CPP in order to discredit or weaken Sokha’s political popularity.
“The ruling party’s strategy is to exert pressure on Sokha and his financial resources. The court may not have issued arrest warrant soon since they would have to conduct more investigation. It is really a critical pressure and could be as effective as to push the opposition to a deadlock and ultimately would result in a political instability,”Virak was quoted as saying in Radio Free Asia.
The CPP’s spokesperson said the party is also in consideration of taking legal actions against some other independent analysts in the case that those politically-affiliated analysts keep talking to the public and the media and applying paints onto CPP.
