Hainan (FN), Mar. 29 – Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Supreme Privy Council to the King, requested the Chinese Government to support the construction of the Funan Techo Canal, a significant waterway project in Cambodia.

Samdech Techo met Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji on 28 March 2024 in Hainan, China.

The Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers and the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces, spanning approximately 180 kilometres. The project is estimated to cost USD 1.7 billion.

During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen informed Zhao Leji that the Funan Techo Canal Project holds great importance for Cambodia's waterway infrastructure. Samdech Techo expressed hope that the Chinese government would support this project.

The study for the Funan Techo Canal Project has been completed, and a construction budget agreement is scheduled to be reached in June 2024.
