Vientiane (FN), Oct. 10 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his New Zealander counterpart Christopher Luxon pledged to enhance trade, in particular the agricultural sector.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held bilateral talks with his New Zealander counterpart Christopher Luxon on Thursday (Oct. 10) in Vientiane, Laos.

During the meeting, Samdech Thipadei expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet Christopher Luxon again following their first meeting in Melbourne, Australia, in March 2024.

Samdech Thipadei thanked New Zealand for its contributions to Cambodia’s peace and development efforts, including the deployment of peacekeepers in the early 1990s, participation in demining activities, and support in human resource development by offering scholarships to Cambodian students and government officials to study in New Zealand.

The two leaders discussed potential areas of cooperation, including education, agriculture, energy, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides expressed their commitment to further boosting trade between their countries, especially in the agricultural sector.

In the energy sector, the two leaders highlighted their shared commitment to clean energy, with both countries aiming to further expand the use of renewable energy in the future.

Regarding people-to-people ties, both leaders affirmed their intention to promote vocational training and human resource development by continuing to offer scholarships to Cambodian students to study in New Zealand.

The two leaders agreed to task their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs with exploring the possibility of formally establishing a consultation mechanism to strengthen and expand cooperation in key areas. They also exchanged views on regional and international affairs, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability as key factors for regional and global development and prosperity.
