Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 7 – On April 2nd, President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on US imports, starting at a 10% blanket rate, with higher rates for specific countries.
Taiwan also sees a 32% tariff, with exemptions for semiconductors and key goods like copper, pharmaceuticals, autos, steel, aluminum, lumber, energy, and unspecified minerals. Notably, GPUs used in AI systems are not exempt.
Trump stated the rates were based on tariffs imposed on the US, currency manipulation, and trade barriers. However, it was later revealed the tariffs were calculated using a formula: US trade deficit divided by imports from each country—not their actual tariff rates.
The method matched what X users and several AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini also generated—suggesting possible AI involvement in the formula’s creation.
