TAIPEI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Six people have been confirmed dead after a bridge collapsed in northeast Taiwan on Tuesday, according to local authorities.

The dead were confirmed to be fishermen from Indonesia and the Philippines, with the youngest being 29 and the oldest 44. Another 12 people have been injured, authorities said.

The accident happened on Tuesday morning at the Nanfang'ao fishing port in Yilan County. A fire broke out after the accident as a tank truck on the bridge crashed into fishing boats moored under the bridge.

Videos released by local media showed the bridge broke apart in the middle and fell into the sea.

Built in the late 1990s, the Nanfang'ao bridge is 140 meters in length and 15 meters in width. It sits across a waterway in the Nanfang'ao fishing port. The most recent overhaul of the bridge was conducted in 2016.
