Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 3 – Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn said on Thursday that in the first nine months of 2019, the Japanese Government has provided USD 60 million worth of aids to assist Cambodia’s development.

The statement was made Thursday at the signing of Exchange of Notes and related documents on the extension of Grant Aid up to the maximum amount of USD 26 million, for the purpose of contributing to the implementation of the Project for Sewerage System Development in Phnom Penh, presided over by Minister Prak Sokhonn and Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Mikami Masahiro at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Prak Sokhonn stated that since the beginning of 2019, the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of Japan signed the following three exchange of notes and transcript of the Japanese financing:

(1) On 20 February 2019, a grant aid worth of approximately USD 43 million was signed, including concessional loans, for irrigation and rehabilitation projects.

(2) On 31 May 2019, a grant aid worth of approximately USD 5 million was signed in Tokyo, presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prime Minister of Japan, for the implementation of Human Resource Development Scholarship and Warehouse Project in the Sihanoukville port.

(3) On 17 July 2019, a grant aid worth of approximately USD 4.6 million was signed for the supply of road maintenance equipment in Cambodia.

It is worth noting that through the Grant Aid signed this Thursday, 3 October 2019, Japan will build a wastewater treatment station before it is released into Cheung Ek Lake in Southern part of Phnom Penh. Japan’s assistance will significantly contribute to the improvement of the living environment in Cambodia.

Minister Prak Sokhonn stated today that: “Japan has not only contributed largely to Cambodia’s peace and stability, but also supported socio-economic rehabilitation and development.”
