Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 29 – Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s judging council rejected Kem Sokha’s request for a linguistic expert to interpret the word “they”, which Kem Sokha mentioned in the video clip taken in 2013 in Australia, which Sokha spoke of his plot to topple the Royal Government of Cambodia.

“The judging council said they have the possibility to determine the term [they] in Kem Sokha’s video clip, so they rejected the defendant’s request,” Government Lawyer Ky Tech spoke to the press following Kem Sokha’s treason trial held this Wednesday morning.

In front of the judging council, Kem Sokha said the word “they” he mentioned in the video clip refers to “Cambodian people in the United States”, while the government lawyer and judging council said the word “they” refers to “any foreign government”.

According to Ky Tech, the hearing this morning focused on inquiring Kem Sokha’s activities from 2007-2012.

Lawyer Tech said Kem Sokha added another lawyer to the team, Lawyer Ang Oudom.

Kem Sokha, leader of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, has been accused of conspiring with foreigners to topple the legitimate Royal Government of Cambodia. If found guilty, Sokha faces up to 30 years imprisonment.
