Phnom Penh (FN), May 30 – One Cambodian peacekeeper in Mali has passed away on Friday due to Covid-19, Cambodian Defense Spokesperson Chum Socheat told Fresh News on Saturday.

Major General Sar Savy was one among the three Cambodian peacekeepers tested positive on 24 April 2020; the trio were sent to a hospital in Bamako under intensive care and treatment by the UN medical team. Two other peacekeepers recovered on 4 May 2020.

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Friday the deaths of two UN peacekeepers from Covid-19, saying one was from Cambodia and the other from El Salvador.

Today, the Kingdom has deployed 800 peacekeepers, 80 female, to Lebanon, South Sudan, Mali and the Central African Republic, working as gendarmeries, observers, and staff in the fields of demining, construction, and airport engineering.
