Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 16 – Cambodia prime minister Hun Sen is committed to protect the Tonle Sap Lake, speaking at the cabinet plenary weekly session on Thursday at Peace Palace.

The premier pledged to implement and enforce various necessary measures, such as immediate actions against illegal logging and land grabbing of the flooded forests along the Tonle Sap Lake.

Samdech also praised the efforts and cooperation of minister of land management Chea Sophara, and Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relations, Tonle Sap Authority, as well as other relevant ministries and institutions.

On 28 November 2021, the premier ordered relevant authorities to crack down illegal logging and land grabbing along the Tonle Sap Lake, especially in Kampong Chhnang province.

Immediately after the premier’s order, minister Chea Sophara set up a working group to conduct further study and inspect the flooded forest areas in the six provinces along the Tonle Sap Lake, including Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap and Kampong Thom. As a result, the governments took back the lands from ill-intended officials and sentenced them in accordance with the laws.
