Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 25 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that Myanmar's senior general Min Aung Hlaing will be invited to the ASEAN Summit if there is a positive progress on the implementation of the ASEAN’s five-point consensus (5-PC); and if not, the senior general shall send a non-political Myanmar representative to the meeting.

The premier spoke in a working meeting with Malaysian prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Tuesday morning (25 Jan) via video conference.

Malaysian premier underlined a similar position that Myanmar issue should be addressed based on the ASEAN charter and full implementation of the 5-PC agreed by ASEAN Leaders.

Yaakob highlighted the priority of ending violence and mobilizing humanitarian relief efforts through the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center). He also stressed the importance of the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy engaging with all parties concerned for a peaceful dialogue in the interest of the people of Myanmar.

According to delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn, the premier’s official visit to Myanmar was to learn the actual situation and find out the root to the crisis in order to effectively implement the ASEAN five-point consensus.

The five-point consensus include:

1. Immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and all parties to exercise utmost restraint.

2. Constructive dialogue among all parties concerned shall commence to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people

3. The special envoy of ASEAN chair to facilitate mediation of the dialogue process, with the assistance of the ASEAN Secretary-General

4. ASEAN to provide humanitarian assistance through the AHA Centre

5. Special envoy and delegation to visit Myanmar to meet all parties concerned.

Cambodian delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn quoted the premier as saying that, “Myanmar crisis is complicated, which cannot be resolved in a few days. It takes times. The ceasefire, the cessation of violence and the humanitarian assistance are important things to be addressed, especially providing humanitarian relief to Myanmar without discrimination.”

Premier Hun Sen and Myanmar’s senior general Min Aung Hlaing will further discuss Myanmar’s crisis on 26 January 2022 via video conference.
