Phnom Penh (FN), May 12 — The British Embassy in Phnom Penh celebrated king Charles III’s Coronation and Birthday on Wednesday 10 May 2023 at the Himawari Hotel.
300 distinguished guests from the Royal Government of Cambodia, Royal Family, diplomatic corps, private sector, civil society, think tanks and students joined British ambassador Dominic Williams to celebrate the event.
Ambassador Dominic Williams and Guest of Honour Ly Thuch gave remarks to mark the Coronation and Birthday of King Charles III and the partnership between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Cambodia for these 70 years.
The Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen took place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey in the heart of London. It marks as a significant cultural event for the United Kingdom as the first coronation in 70 years since late Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in June 1953. King Charles III has become crowned king and head of state of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms.
Dominic Williams, British ambassador to Cambodia said:
“Throughout the last 70 years of the UK-Cambodia relationship, our respective Royal Families have played an essential role in providing continuity and bringing our nations together in both difficult times and moments of celebration. So I am especially delighted to be able to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties king Charles III and queen Camilla in the presence of members of the Cambodian Royal Family.
The last 70 years have been tumultuous, yet the UK and Cambodia have achieved a lot together – from protecting public health to wildlife conservation and demining. The next 70 years promise to be even more challenging, with threats from rising geopolitical tensions and acute challenges like climate change. We will best be able to engage the future with confidence when our decisions are informed by open public debate and when we work in broad international coalitions. The UK will move forward with Cambodia in a spirit of friendship and partnership and I am confident that, in our relationship, the best is yet to come.”
Ly Thuch, senior minister & first vice president of the Cambodian Mine Action & Victim Assistance Authority said:
“I would like to present my most sincere congratulations to His Majesty King Charles III and my best wishes for a glorious Reign that will translate into greater happiness and prosperity to the friendly People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We are grateful to His Majesty’s commitment to public service, and his dedication to making a positive difference in the world. His Majesty King Charles III has been a tireless advocate for a range of noble causes including environmental conservation, sustainable development, and humanitarian issues.
Over the years, our two countries have developed all-round good cooperation for the mutual benefit of our two Peoples as manifested through the frequent exchanges of high-level visits. This year is an important milestone for our two Kingdoms as we mark the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations".
