Phnom Penh (FN), May 15 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen believed that about 80 percent of the people at the SEA Games opening ceremony shed happy tears and were proud of the nation.

The premier spoke at a graduation of over 3,000 agricultural students, held on Monday (May 15) at Diamond Island.

“I believe that approximately 80 per cent of the attendees at the opening ceremony shed tears while witnessing a historic event of the nation,” the premier underlined.

Cambodia is now able to host the games after requesting for postponement and understanding from the ASEAN members for the past few years, the premier added.

Samdech continued, the basis of organizing this SEA Games will be left as a legacy for the next generation, and that the national stadiums will become a venue for national and international sports competitions.

“It is an obligation of the ASEAN member states to host the SEA Games respectively, but I requested for understanding from the leaders of ASEAN countries, so that we were able to allocate fund for the economic recovery,” the premier underlined.

On that occasion, premier Hun Sen affirmed that the achievement from the successful hosting of the SEA Games does not belong to him or the Royal Government or the Cambodian People's Party, but to the entire Cambodian nation.

Cambodia officially opened the SEA Games sporting event on 5 May 2023 at the Moradok Techo National Stadiums, with a participation of local and foreign dignitaries as well as tens of thousands of people and international guests.
