Phnom Penh (FN), May 15 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that the policy of having agricultural officials stationed in each commune/district nationwide aims to accelerate Cambodia’s agricultural development, which is the core sector in supporting national economic growth.

The premier spoke at a graduation of over 3,000 agricultural students, held on Monday morning (May 15) at Diamond Island.

"I advised to pay close attention to the living conditions of those assigned officials and enhance cooperation among the professionals […] In this sense, we can accelerate Cambodia’s agricultural development,” the premier underscored.

The agricultural sector has now played a smaller role in the national economy, but that does not mean it is inefficient, the premier added. The sector has actively contributed to ensuring food security, improving citizens' living standards, reducing poverty, boosting exports, and sustaining national economic growth despite natural disasters and global crises.

In 2022, the kingdom’s crop production reached 34.71 million tons, of which 11.62 million tons are rice, 4.42 million tons are horticultural crops, and 18.67 million tons are industrial crops.
