Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 2 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet advised against imposing obligations on parents to participate in education promotion programs or financial burdens on them in any educational context.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Mar. 2) during the closing 2023 annual meeting of the Ministry of Education at Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "I see the importance of encouraging the involvement of teachers, parents, and their support, but when seeking parental support, we should not coerce them. While establishing an equity fund for guidance is beneficial, we must refrain from making it compulsory or uncomfortable. Demanding additional financial obligations from parents must be avoided at all costs.”

Samdech Thipadei also noted that parents and guardians, even if they lack financial means, strive to support schools through various means including introducing their children to teachers.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also suggested leaving the creation of an equity fund to teachers and guardians, cautioning against potential misunderstandings and issues arising from unclear design.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that parental participation need not be solely financial. Instead, it's essential for parents to engage in educating their children to respect the school and teachers.

At this point, Samdech Thipadei added that fostering a strong relationship between teachers, parents, and students is pivotal in advancing education. He highlighted the prevalent issue, especially in urban schools, of the growing disconnect between parents and students.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet attributed excessive parental attachment to children to a loss of contact with teachers. To address this, the premier emphasized the importance of nurturing positive relationships between teachers, parents, and students, which play a crucial role in both school-based and extra-curricular education at home.
