Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 18 – Former lawmaker of the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kong Sakphea wrote a letter requesting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to intervene to obtain a pardon and drop all charges against him, according to a letter seen by Fresh News on Thursday (Apr. 18).

Kong Sakphea wrote, "I, Kong Sakphea, former CNRP lawmaker representing Svay Rieng province, deeply regret that some of my past actions and activities have affected the peace, development process, stability, and policies of the Royal Government of Cambodia. I sincerely apologise to the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, especially to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Samdech Techo Hun Sen."

He continued, "Therefore, I humbly request the prime minister to request to Cambodian king to grant me a pardon, and to drop all charges against me. I hope that the prime minister will intervene to alleviate all punishments so that I can return to my homeland, reunite with my family, and care for my elderly parents with the utmost compassion."

On 17 July 2023, Kong Sakphea, along with 15 others including Sam Rainsy, was fined 10 to 20 million Riels by the Phnom Penh Election Commission (PEC). Additionally, their names were removed from the voter list and they were barred from standing for election for 20 to 25 years.

Cambodian legal system allows the king to grant pardon upon the request made by the prime minister. Article 27 of the Constitution states that the king shall have the right to grant partial or complete amnesty.
