Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 26 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen mentioned that the Funan Techo Canal Project will serve vital purpose of providing water supply to residents in Cambodia's southwest and mitigating flood risks during the rainy seasons.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Apr. 26) during his gala dinner with Cambodian Oknha Association at Garden City Hotel Phnom Penh.

Samdech Hun Sen highlighted that the Funan-Techo Canal Project will become the primary source of water supply for the kingdom's southwestern provinces, namely Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep provinces. At the same time, it will be possible to divert water to Kampong Speu province during water shortages.

Samdech Techo continued that farmland in Cambodia's southwest will also benefit, allowing for rice cultivation once, twice, or even thrice a year.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo reassured that the canal project would not disrupt the Mekong River's water flow, as it connects from the Bassac River and incorporates a sluice gate to regulate freshwater outflow to the sea.

The Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It is about 180 kilometres long. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
