Phnom Penh (FN), May. 3 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the Funan Techo canal project has fostered a unified support movement through extensive publicity and joint voices for the national interests.

The premier spoke on Friday (May 3) during the 6th meeting with Journalists at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The momentum of our inspiration, especially in supporting the Royal Government and Samdech Techo in promoting the country's development. In fact, the issue of the Funan canal has sparked a significant nationalist movement. This stems from our common goal, the exercise of rights, and the collective expression used to advance our national interests."

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that this resurgence represents the fourth power, a potent force for mobilising national strength, not necessarily originating solely from the Royal Government or the court, but from inspiration. This movement, facilitated by the sharing of information from all perspectives, represents a power that is not visibly documented in norms but serves as significant inspiration.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked people for their support.

The Funan Techo canal project, linking the Mekong River to the sea, represents a significant milestone in Cambodia's history and promises substantial benefits for the nation and its people.

In other words, this canal constitutes a vital component of the country's socio-economic development, enhancing water transport and navigation while fostering connectivity between the Cambodian economy and the broader region and world. Moreover, it aids in mitigating flooding in the southwestern provinces, ensuring a reliable water supply for Cambodians engaged in agriculture and aquaculture. Additionally, it facilitates the transportation of agricultural products from the provinces, streamlining logistics and reducing time and associated costs.

The Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It is about 180 kilometres long. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
