Phnom Penh (FN), May. 3 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet noted that the freedom of the press in Cambodia is progressing and moving towards better regulation and a greater state of freedom of expression. The environment is becoming more favourable as journalists can report freely while upholding ethics and professionalism.

The premier spoke on Friday (May 3) during the 6th meeting with journalists at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre.

On that occasion, Samdech Thipadei underscored that "the freedom of the press in Cambodia is advancing and moving towards better regulation. The state of freedom of expression remains favourable as journalists can report freely based on ethics and professionalism."

Premier Hun Manet added that currently, in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Cambodia has made significant progress in the media. The country maintains openness in terms of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the Press Law. Journalists, press entities, and associations are facilitated accordingly.

"According to the Ministry of Information, there are approximately 10,000 journalists and over 2,000 media outlets," Samdech Thipadei further underscored.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also commended the efforts of the Ministry of Information and all stakeholders in developing a vision, strategy, and action plan to enhance the information and audio-visual sector, as well as to promote freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei praised the publication of a report on the state of press freedom in Cambodia, which accurately reflects the situation witnessed by all professional journalists. According to a survey of 341 journalists, 79.8 per cent stated that press freedom in Cambodia was good, with 71 per cent describing it as very good and 8.8 per cent as good.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei continued that for over 45 years, information on the achievements and progress of the Royal Government has been disseminated rapidly, comprehensively, and in a timely manner, both domestically and internationally, to provide better understanding of Cambodia. These activities are vital and made possible by the hard work of journalists who overcome various obstacles to report swiftly and comprehensively on the real situation in Cambodia, particularly during significant historical events in the country's past.
