Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 4 – Sean Turnell, a former Economic Adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi, once again thanked Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodian President of the Senate, for his efforts to secure his release from military detention in Myanmar.

At the invitation of the Australian Government, Son Sam, Policy Analyst of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, visited Australia from 24-30 May 2024. During the visit, he met with Australian government officials, scholars, and the Australian deputy foreign minister in charge of Southeast Asian Affairs.

During his visit to Australia, Son Sam also met with Sean Turnell. Upon learning that Son Sam was from Cambodia, Sean Turnell expressed great joy, repeatedly expressing his gratitude to Cambodia, especially to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, for his efforts in securing his release from military detention in Myanmar.

Please be informed that the former economic advisor of Aung San Suu Kyi was detained by the Burmese military following a military coup in February 2021. When Cambodia assumed the chair of ASEAN in 2022, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, then Prime Minister and chair of ASEAN, worked diligently to find a suitable solution to the crisis in Burma. He made several attempts to secure the release of Sean Turnell and facilitate his return to Australia.

Although Sean Turnell is now free and reunited with his family in Australia, he remains deeply grateful for the efforts of Samdech Techo Hun Sen. Currently, he is a researcher in Asian affairs at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, Australia.
