Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 28 – Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), appealed to pagodas and the general public to beat the drum and make some noise to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for the Funan Techo Canal.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Jun. 28) on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), held at the CPP’s headquarters.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said, "I propose to the Royal Government that on August 5, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Funan Techo Canal construction, all pagodas and public places should beat the drums and organise firework shows to show support for the project."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the project would create long-term opportunities for Cambodia, enabling the country to establish its own sea transport route without relying on other nations. He added that the canal will become a major ecosystem in Cambodia, contributing to climate change mitigation and enhancing the green area in the southwest throughout all seasons. Additionally, Samdech Techo confirmed that the Funan Techo Canal will enhance Cambodia's political independence in water transport. He assured that the canal will not impact the environment or the flow of the Mekong River.

In the spirit of national unity, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed gratitude to compatriots everywhere for their full support of the upcoming Funan Techo Canal project. He highlighted this as another powerful national movement, akin to past efforts to defend sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to protect public health.

The Funan Techo Canal project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It is about 180 kilometres long. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
