Kampong Cham (FN), Jul. 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that the Royal Government's decision to abolish fishing lots as stipulated in a sub-decree in the fourth mandate, under the leadership of former Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, was the right choice. This decision transferred management to local residents, allowing them to organize fishing communities that directly benefit the community.

The premier spoke on Monday (Jul. 1) during the celebration of the 19th National Fish Day in Kampong Cham province.

Samdech Thipadei added that the practice of organizing fishing lots dates back to the early 1900s, during the French colonial period, when fishing lots were used to collect taxes.

"Samdech Techo implemented a policy to abolish fishing lots around the Tonle Sap Lake to transfer management to fishermen, allowing them to organize productive communities. This policy has been beneficial for local residents both individually and as a community,” the premier underscored.

It should be noted that according to Sub-Decree No. 37, dated 7 March 2012, the Royal Government decided to abolish fishing lots around Tonle Sap Lake in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, and Kampong Thom. This allowed local residents to fish as families and created fishery conservation areas. According to Article 1 of this sub-decree, all fishing lots around the Tonle Sap Lake were to be removed, totalling 37 locations in the aforementioned six provinces.
