Kampong Cham (FN), Jul. 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an end to the use of illegal fishing gear, include unauthorized nets, explosives, or other prohibited gear that harm aquatic environments or violate fishing regulations, especially during the off-season and the spawning season (from 1 June 1 to 31 October), which significantly affects people's daily lives.

The premier spoke on Monday (Jul. 1) during the celebration of the 19th National Fish Day in Kampong Cham province.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Prevention and Suppression of Fishing Crimes in the Tonle Sap Lake must enhance cooperation and intensify efforts to prevent illegal fishing, especially during spawning seasons. It is crucial to close fishing grounds for spawning fish and enforce strict measures against the production, distribution, and use of highly destructive fishing gear such as traps and nets."

Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined the importance of increasing public education and fostering community participation in conserving and sustaining fisheries resources for future generations.

In addition, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also instructed the Fisheries Administration, Sub-National Administration, and relevant stakeholders to bolster the fishing community's capacity in managing, protecting, and conserving fisheries resources.

On the occasion, the premier also advocated for expanding ecotourism activities in all communities, particularly in areas abundant with fish, dolphins, birds, flooded forests, and mangrove forests, to support fishermen's livelihoods and reduce their reliance solely on fishing for livelihoods.
