Tokyo (FN), Jul. 10 – General Mao Sophan, Deputy Commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart, General Yasunori Morishita on 9 July 2024 in Tokyo, Japan.

During the meeting, General Morishita praised the enduring friendship between the two countries, established in 1953, which has grown steadily over the past 70 years. This relationship was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023.

Mao Sophan expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and the people of Japan for their assistance in seeking and maintaining peace, particularly through the deployment of peacekeepers to Cambodia in 1992. He underlined that Japan is an indispensable partner in Cambodia's development process.

On the occasion, both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global situations and pledged to further strengthen and broaden military cooperation. This includes military exchanges at all levels, human resource training, joint exercises, and cooperation on demining.
