Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 11 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the sports sector has made remarkable progress and played a crucial role in Cambodia and globally. Sports gain more attention and support from people of all backgrounds, regardless of their colour or political affiliation.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Jul. 11) during the opening of the 2nd Asian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championship in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei reiterated that Cambodia successfully hosted the 32nd SEA Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games in 2023.

"Sports have grown significantly and played a crucial role in Cambodia and globally. Sports gain more attention and support from people at every level, regardless of colour or political affiliation. In this sense, sporting events are not just competitions, but also opportunities to promote tourism, culture, society, economy, and national reputation, as well as to strengthen the bonds of solidarity and friendship between sports delegations from various countries," the premier underscored.

The Royal Government has been focusing on the development of sports to create better conditions for the general public to participate and to enhance the ability of athletes to excel in competitions and win major sporting events, all while maintaining peace, political stability, and economic growth.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei has proposed organising a traditional Khmer martial arts competition every October, starting in 2024. This event will be open to all types of traditional Khmer martial arts practitioners from everywhere. All participants, including ordinary people, civil servants, armed forces, and foreigners, are welcome.
