Siem Reap (FN), Jul. 18 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged all social media users to be responsible and wise to avoid spreading fake news, speaking on Thursday (Jul. 17) during a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Samdech Pin Sem Museum in Siem Reap province.

"Last week, I was able to stop several fake news stories that could have caused significant chaos. On July 11, I noticed a social media comment questioning why we banned the Ting Mong Parade in Saang district. I promptly consulted with Governor Kouch Chamroeun of Kandal province, who clarified that there was no ban on the parade. Rather, measures were in place to maintain social order along the road and prevent accidents. The timely response from Kouch Chamroeun prevented potential chaos sparked by this misinformation,” the premier underlined.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also clarified that recent reports of a strike against importing Vietnamese electric taxis to Cambodia were unfounded because no such taxis have been imported, as confirmed last year. He personally verified with all ministries and institutions to dispel any misunderstandings among citizens. It was later found out that the news was published by unlicensed VOD radio.

"So, consider this: is it a right or freedom to mislead the people, knowing it could lead to demonstrations and instability despite my announcements?" the premier questioned. "This radio station [VOD] consistently ignored warnings, prompting the Ministry of Information to revoke its license."

Samdech Thipadei noted that yesterday, the Spanish Prime Minister, from a European and democratic country, stated, “Without reliable and diverse sources of information, the citizens are blind."

Samdech Thipadei continued, "We must set clear obligations. Every government, not just Cambodia's, grants rights and freedoms to citizens. However, citizens must also respect others' rights to receive reliable news and avoid using politics to sow societal discord. I urge everyone: while incorrect news can be corrected, intentional spread of fake news for political gain is unacceptable."
