Kandal (FN), Aug. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that suspicions within Cambodian society had caused national divisions and that some people still had doubts about the Funan Techo Canal project, fearing a loss of sovereignty.

The premier spoke on Monday (Aug. 5) during a groundbreaking ceremony of Funan Techo Canal.

Samdech Thipadei stated that this project does not compromise sovereignty but rather enhances Cambodia's potential to defend its national independence and sovereignty.

In the past, some ill-intended groups have tried to distort information related to the canal project by accusing the Cambodian government of undermining national sovereignty. This has led to suspicions among a small number of people, preventing the canal project from gaining broader acceptance.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underlined that such suspicions have always created mistrust among the Cambodian people and eroded their trust in the Royal Government.

The premier further underscored, "When we have doubts about each other, it becomes easier to divide the nation. Therefore, to address our internal concerns and doubts, we need to make this project successful. By sharing the completed project, we can see if the doubts disappear and confirm our achievements through tangible results."

There is no loss of sovereignty with the implementation of the Funan Techo Canal project, as the Cambodian state-owned company holds a 51 per cent stake, while the Chinese company CRBC holds a 49 per cent stake.

Samdech Thipadei further added, "However, BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) does not mean the loss of sovereignty. They construct the road and have the right to collect tolls, but our laws remain intact. We do not have the right to cede any part of our territory to any company, regardless of the country of investment."

Samdech Thipadei hopes that by opening the construction site of the Funan Techo Canal, internal doubts among Cambodian people will be alleviated, preventing further division. He also urged the public to protect and utilise this project to develop the nation and enhance its potential to defend national independence and sovereignty.
