Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 6 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet noted that participation in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Funan Techo canal clearly demonstrated the united forces within Cambodian society.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Aug. 6) during a graduation ceremony for University of Puthisastra students at OCIC, Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "While we might view the construction of this canal as just an infrastructure project, the common spirit we have seen confirms that it is much more. This canal project symbolises the unity of our Cambodian nation and reflects our hopes and resilience in strengthening our independence, prestige, and sovereignty."

The Funan Techo canal project involves re-excavating a canal that dates back to the Funan or Phnom Kingdom period, the first Khmer kingdom, and a time of great prosperity for the Khmer people. Under the exemplary leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodia is reviving this crucial waterway network, which had been neglected for nearly 2,000 years.

The Funan Techo canal project, initiated by Samdech Techo Hun Sen and now pursued by Prime Minister Hun Manet, aims to bring significant benefits to Cambodia. The groundbreaking ceremony for the canal took place at the Mekong River in Prek Takeo village, Samrong Thom commune, Kien Svay district, Kandal province.

The Funan Techo canal will greatly benefit Cambodia by improving transportation, reducing costs, saving time and distance, and alleviating road damage, traffic congestion, and accidents. It will simplify shipping procedures and enhance trade, establish trade zones and special economic zones, develop new seaports, expand agricultural and irrigation zones, and boost aquaculture, tourism, and flood relief during the rainy season. Overall, this project serves the national interest, particularly in the socio-economic development of Cambodia.
