Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 8 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the presence of De Montfort University is an added value to higher education institutions, having been selected as a global hub for the United Nations and other partners to meet the Sustainable Development Goals through research, community work, and academic excellence.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Aug. 8) during an opening of De Montfort University Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei stated that the presence of De Montfort University would be a catalyst for improving the quality of higher education in Cambodia and increasing options for the Cambodian education and student market.

Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that De Montfort University could help Cambodia prevent brain drain by providing education and job creation within Cambodia itself. He believed that this development presents a new opportunity for students to benefit greatly from the British education system in their home country.

On the occasion, the premier added that De Montfort University would also offer opportunities for Cambodian students to gain short-term and long-term higher education experiences in the United Kingdom or other countries. By having a direct presence in Cambodia, this university will contribute to cultivating culture and understanding of the international environment, alongside fostering values and the development of Cambodian society.

Samdech Thipadei continued that the seventh-mandate Royal Government is committed to prioritising "people" in the nation's development towards achieving high-income status in line with the Cambodia Vision 2050.

De Montfort University (DMU) is one of the UK's most prestigious higher education institutions, founded in 1870, and has been operating for more than 150 years. The university has approximately 35,000 students studying in the UK and at its overseas branches. De Montfort University maintains international standards, with branches in the United Kingdom, the Middle East (Dubai), East Asia (Kazakhstan), and now Southeast Asia (Cambodia). It is ranked among the UK's top 20 universities for helping students secure employment. De Montfort University is the only university in the UK recognised by the United Nations as a global hub for sustainable development goals.
