Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 8 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted Cambodia's political stability and economic growth as key factors prompting De Montfort University to invest in education in Cambodia.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Aug. 8) during the opening of De Montfort University Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

"Opening a university is a significant achievement, but assessing the feasibility of long-term sustainability and ensuring proper governance are crucial considerations. De Montfort University’s decision to choose Cambodia as its first Southeast Asian branch demonstrates its strong confidence in Cambodia’s investment climate and market potential," the premier underscored.

The presence of De Montfort University demonstrates the recognition of the quality of education in Cambodia and the capability of Cambodian students to attend and excel in higher education. The British university chose to set up its branch in Cambodia because of Cambodia's commitment to education.

According to the premier, De Montfort University recognizes that education is influencing Cambodia's development as the Royal Government continues to constantly improve the quality and potential of the education sector and promote internationalization.

Additionally, the university sees that Cambodia is full of young people who are energetic and proactive in contributing to their personal development as well as the development of their communities and society as a whole.

With the presence of this prestigious UK university in Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei hopes it will enhance the quality of higher education in the country and offer students a wider range of educational opportunities. The premier believes this represents a significant opportunity for Cambodian students to benefit from the UK education system while studying at home.

De Montfort University (DMU) is one of the UK's most prestigious higher education institutions, founded in 1870, and has been operating for more than 150 years. The university has approximately 35,000 students studying in the UK and at its overseas branches. De Montfort University maintains international standards, with branches in the United Kingdom, the Middle East (Dubai), East Asia (Kazakhstan), and now Southeast Asia (Cambodia). It is ranked among the UK's top 20 universities for helping students secure employment. De Montfort University is the only university in the UK recognised by the United Nations as a global hub for sustainable development goals.
