Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 9 – Deputy Military Attache Col. Sergei Shumilin said that the newly arrived F-16 fighter jets in Ukraine pose a serious threat to Russia’s national security. He added that these jets are legitimate targets for the Russian Armed Forces and will be destroyed like other NATO-supplied weapons.

His statement was made during a press briefing of the Russian Embassy in Cambodia on Russia’s foreign policy and developments around Ukraine, held on Thursday (Aug. 8) at the Embassy.

“This step, as well as military development of the Ukrainian territory by NATO are part of the general Western course to escalate the crisis, instead of creating conditions for political and diplomatic settlement. By injecting more lethal weapons into the Kiev regime, the United States and its satellites are staking on further hostilities at the expense of Ukrainian people’s lives and by using that country as a proxy. All this is done in line with their dream of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia, while ignoring the grave consequences of their irresponsible actions,” Col. Sergei Shumilin underlined.

He continued, “The presence of American F-16 fighters in the South Eastern Europe is a serious threat to Russia’s national security. They will not change the situation on the line of contact. The fighters are a legitimate target for the Russian Armed Forces and will be destroyed just like any other type of weapons supplied by NATO countries to Ukraine.”

The F-16 fighters have long been used as the main vehicle in NATO’s so-called joint nuclear missions. Therefore, the decision to supply these systems to Ukraine may be regarded as a deliberate signal from NATO concerning nuclear weapons, Col. Sergei Shumilin added.
