Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 4 – India unveiled its second nuclear-powered submarine last week in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, armed with ballistic missiles with a 750-km range. This strengthens India's nuclear deterrence, giving it the ability to launch weapons from land, air, and sea.

The US leads the world with 66 nuclear-powered submarines, while Russia has about 30, and China had 12 as of 2024. Nuclear-powered subs are fuelled by reactors, not necessarily armed with nuclear weapons, but often used for defense purposes.

The US agreed to sell three nuclear subs to Australia in the 2030s under the AUKUS deal, drawing criticism from China. Brazil plans to start building its own in 2025 with France's help.
