Vientiane (FN), Oct. 11 – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada will soon open an Embassy in Phnom Penh to expand relations and cooperation between Cambodia and Canada.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held bilateral talks with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on 10 October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos.
During the meeting, Premier Justin Trudeau expressed his pleasure at meeting Prime Minister Hun Manet and emphasized the importance of further strengthening the relationship and cooperation between the two countries.
Trudeau added that, in order to enhance diplomatic ties, Canada plans to establish an embassy in Phnom Penh. Regarding trade relations, Canada will send a trade delegation to Cambodia to engage with the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and other relevant ministries to promote bilateral trade, as both countries hold significant potential in this area. He also expressed optimism about the future of Canada-ASEAN trade relations, especially with the upcoming ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement.
For his part, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed appreciation for the longstanding and growing Cambodia-Canada relationship and thanked Canada for its contributions to Cambodia's peace efforts, including sending peacekeepers in the 1990s, supporting demining efforts, and providing development assistance.
Additionally, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet informed his Canadian counterpart that Canada is Cambodia's seventh-largest bilateral trade partner, which has played a role in Cambodia's socioeconomic development through job creation and the professional skills development of Cambodian youth.
The prime minister also highlighted recent advancements in cooperation, such as a recent trade fair in Montreal and the planned opening of a Cambodian embassy in Canada. He underlined that the Royal Government of Cambodia has introduced a series of in-depth reforms to meet the needs of the private sector, creating a more favourable investment climate with incentives aimed at fostering private sector growth.
