Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 24 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced to strengthen and broaden cooperation to support Cambodian development, including providing USD 12 million in demining assistance.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call by the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Samantha Power, on 23 October 2024 at the Peace Palace.
Samantha Power commended Cambodia’s development progress, noting the country’s recovery from decades of civil war. She praised the strong partnership between USAID and the Royal Government of Cambodia across multiple sectors, particularly in health (with a focus on combating tuberculosis and malaria), food security, and demining.
She affirmed USAID’s continued support for Cambodia’s socioeconomic development and efforts to improve the livelihoods of its citizens. Regarding demining, Power announced a commitment of USD 12 million to further assist the Royal Government’s efforts in demining and clearing unexploded ordnance.
In response, Samdech Thipadei expressed his appreciation for the strong cooperation between the Royal Government and USAID. He also thanked the US government and its people for their long-standing support in rebuilding and developing Cambodia since the early 1990s, which has contributed to the nation's ongoing progress.
Both sides discussed various initiatives to further strengthen and broaden cooperation between the Royal Government and USAID in key sectors such as trade, investment, health, education, agriculture, good governance, security, and law enforcement.
