Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen raised the question of whether it is time to classify the opposition group as a terrorist organisation, citing the actions of extremist groups living abroad that have repeatedly disrupted peace by forming opposition movements.
Samdech Techo spoke on Thursday (Nov. 21) during the opening of the 32nd National Congress of Buddhist Monks at the National Institute of Education.
"Is it time for the Royal Government or lawmakers to draft a law to designate this group as a terrorist organisation? This is an issue that I and other politicians are closely monitoring to determine if the time has come. There are acts of provocation that could lead to armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. This is not just a domestic issue in Cambodia; it could escalate into something far more serious," Samdech Techo underscored.
Samdech Techo’s remarks come as Cambodia and Thailand continue bilateral talks over the issue of Koh Kood, a disputed area along their shared border.
Samdech Techo further noted that the scars of past conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand remain, continuing to cause pain for the people of both countries who still grieve the loss of family members and the injuries inflicted by extremists. He urged that extremist groups in both Cambodia and Thailand seeking refuge abroad should reflect on this, as the disagreements between neighbouring countries should not be treated as a common issue.
