Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined that the Royal Government approved 23 new energy source development projects with a total capacity of 5,950 MW, the majority of which are clean energy sources.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 21) at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
"At the recent cabinet meeting, the Royal Government approved 23 energy development projects with a total capacity of 5,950 MW. Currently, 62% of our energy comes from clean sources, and we aim to increase this to 70% by 2030. Among ASEAN countries, Cambodia ranks second in clean energy utilization, with Laos in first place due to its abundant hydropower resources. By 2023, our energy mix will include solar, hydropower, biomass, and more to ensure sustainability, stability, and affordability," the premier underscored.
The premier noted that for the electricity investment project, the Royal Government has negotiated with investors to secure low-cost energy production, enabling the supply of electricity to citizens at affordable rates.
Please be informed that during the weekly cabinet meeting on 27 September 2024, the Royal Government approved 23 investment projects in the power sector, including: 12 solar energy projects, 6 wind energy projects, 1 biomass combined with solar project, 1 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, 1 hydropower project and 2 storage station projects.
Of the 23 projects, 21 are power plant development projects with a combined capacity of 3,950 MW, while the remaining two are power storage projects with a total capacity of 2,000 MW.
