Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that there were no secret discussions between former Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for personal gain or to compromise territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 21) at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

On that occasion, Premier Hun Manet clarified allegations of collusion between the families of Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Thaksin, asserting that such claims are baseless. He explained that these efforts, which began in 1995, have always been conducted transparently and aimed at mutual benefits, particularly in relation to border negotiations, with no compromise on Cambodia's territorial rights.

Samdech Thipadei underlined those discussions regarding border issues, economic cooperation, and resolving the Cambodia-Thailand Overlapping Claims Area (OCA) are focused on promoting energy security and economic growth for both nations. The collaborative exploitation of resources within the OCA is intended to benefit the people of both countries, not for personal enrichment.

"There is no secret stockpile of hundreds of billions of barrels of oil benefiting the families of Samdech Techo and Thaksin. These efforts are solely aimed at lowering gas prices and reducing electricity costs for the people by bringing in as much energy as possible," Samdech Thipadei underscored.

The premier added that border negotiations concerning sovereignty are ongoing through the joint technical committee, conducted meticulously with the spirit of serving national interests. He criticised baseless claims by overseas politicians and warned against attempts to politicise technical boundary discussions.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that no agreements or MoUs related to the OCA have been finalised, urging the public not to worry or make uninformed accusations. He continued that the OCA negotiations have no connection to territorial loss, as these matters have been handled carefully since the French colonial era.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also cautioned politicians against intertwining political agendas with technical issues, stressing that border resolutions should adhere to legal and technical standards. Politics should prioritise national interests, not provoke public distrust of the government.

Prime Minister Hun Manet added that the Royal Government's commitment to protecting and safeguarding Cambodia's land and sovereignty. He commended officials for their efforts in border negotiations, aiming to preserve the well-being of citizens from both nations. He called for enhanced cooperation, highlighting the importance of neighbouring countries coexisting peacefully and collaboratively.
