Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Mines and Energy to strengthen revenue collection and prevent income leakage caused by unjust or illegal mining operations, speaking on Thursday (Nov. 21) at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also directed the sub-national administration to actively prevent and suppress all illegal mining activities within their respective jurisdictions.
Samdech Thipadei instructed the Ministry of Mines and Energy, along with relevant institutions, to continue focusing on strengthening safety management and improving the welfare of workers. He called for stringent oversight of the purchase, transportation, storage, and use of explosives and chemicals, as well as thorough monitoring of mineral resource business sites.
It should be noted that, according to Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, the mining sector has significantly contributed to non-tax revenue, which is expected to reach nearly USD 90 million in 2024—a 170 per cent increase compared to 2023 and approximately 150 per cent of the target outlined in the 2024 budget law.
In addition, the revenue from the gold mining sector is estimated to contribute nearly USD 31 million in 2024. Revenue from export duties on all types of products is forecasted to reach USD 31.3 million in 2023 and increase to USD 61 million in 2024.
