Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed the decision to revoke the license of the limestone mining operation in favour of promoting tourism.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 21) at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
"I support the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s policy to prohibit mining operations in heritage sites, historical sites, and cultural areas [...] I have decided to revoke the licence of the limestone mining industry in Kampot province following the ministry’s request and technical review," the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted that while mineral resources are non-renewable, their extraction is necessary for socioeconomic development in every country. However, he stressed the importance of sustainable extraction methods that avoid significant harm to society and the environment.
On 14 November 2024, the premier announced the suspension of new mining licences in the Prey Lang Conservation Area and approved the suspension of existing mining operations and licences in the area. He also emphasised that licensed areas must be downsized if inactive, properly managed to prevent abandonment, and adhere to established guidelines.
Furthermore, the premier instructed the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Cult and Religion, and the Kampot Provincial Administration to inspect and expedite efforts to transform the heritage site in Kampot from a quarry into a community-based tourism destination.
