Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged opposition politicians abroad to refrain from politicising border issues and misleading the public. He affirmed that the Royal Government is committed to safeguarding Cambodia’s territorial integrity while pursuing clear border demarcations with neighbouring countries, an effort that has remained unresolved for centuries.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 21) at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
On that occasion, Samdech Thipadei urged the opposition not to politicize the issue of the Overlapping Claims Area (OCA) in the Gulf between Cambodia and Thailand, highlighting that such actions could harm national interests. He underlined that border issues are legal and technical matters, and politicising them on social media would only create unnecessary complications.
Samdech Thipadei stated that politicians do politics, but when it comes to border issues, let border technicians handle it. Before taking any action, politicians should think of national interests. They must not create conflict or lead people into actions that could lead to illegality.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "Regarding the maritime boundary with Thailand, we are still negotiating. There is no consensus yet on who gets what or what is wrong. Negotiations are ongoing, and once an agreement is reached, clear boundaries will be set. These issues have been unresolved for hundreds of years, but we will resolve them. We must love the land, not just protect it."
The premier added, "The government, as well as the officials negotiating, are committed to this land. Thai officials share the same sentiment. The matter will be resolved clearly, and the people will continue to live together peacefully. Cooperation between the two countries must be strengthened."
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei also instructed Minister of Interior Sar Sokha to negotiate with the Thai side to connect the Stung Bot border road, facilitating transportation and trade between the two nations.
Samdech Thipadei added that both the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Royal Government of Thailand have worked hard to resolve issues so that people living along the border can trade smoothly. The two governments are seeking peaceful, lawful, and technical solutions, and opposition politicians should not incite hatred against the government or fuel conflict with neighbouring countries.
