Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 23 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the state must continue to promote religion, including Buddhism and other faiths, as the country modernises. He noted that religion plays an increasingly important role in a modern society and that religious beliefs are not obstacles to modernisation.
The premier spoke on Saturday (Nov. 23) during the closing of the 32nd National Congress of Buddhist Monks at the National Institute of Education.
On this occasion, Samdech Thipadei underlined the role of Dharma in shaping societal values, including teaching generosity, forgiveness, and responsibility. He reflected on the post-1979 period, noting that even after the suppression of religion between 1975 and 1979, the moral teachings instilled prior to that time influenced Cambodian society. For instance, parents often taught forgiveness, even in extreme circumstances, as part of the values rooted in Buddhist education.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The state must continue to promote religion, whether Buddhism or any other faith. As the country becomes more modern, religion plays an increasingly important role. Even in the United States, the most modern country in the world, people still visit places of worship, including pagodas or churches, on Sundays. Faith does not prevent anyone from becoming a scientist or achieving success. Similarly, Buddhism in Cambodia remains an integral part of our society."
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that the foundations of modern success are deeply connected to religious Dharma, which has guided human society for thousands of years. "Of course, material and technological aspects evolve, the core principles of human society and religion remain unchanged," the premier added.
Samdech Thipadei reaffirmed, "Doing good deeds and purifying the mind are essential values for creating a society characterised by equity, solidarity, and harmony. This aligns with the Pentagon Strategy-Phase I of the seventh-mandate Royal Government. In this strategy, human capital development encompasses five angles, the fifth of which emphasises fostering citizenship, high moral standards, equity, and inclusivity."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Manet continued that aligning with the Cambodian Constitution, which declares Buddhism as the state religion, requires increased efforts to promote Buddhism. He urged Cambodians to deepen their understanding and practice of Buddhist teachings, focusing on refraining from harmful actions and fostering moral integrity.
