Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 23 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet dismissed claims that the Funan Techo Canal project has run out of funds, stressing the Royal Government’s careful and responsible approach to development. He reassured that the project team is meticulously evaluating its impact, particularly prioritizing the concerns and well-being of affected citizens.
The premier spoke on Saturday (Nov. 23) during the closing of the 32nd National Congress of Buddhist Monks at the National Institute of Education.
"Recently, I have heard claims that the Funan Techo Canal project has run out of funds. How can they say such things? If they arise from ignorance, I can overlook them. However, some knowingly spread these falsehoods with ill intent,” the premier underlined.
The premier continued, "After the groundbreaking on August 25, some accused us of destroying citizens’ houses. If we did nothing, they would claim we lack funding. Let me clarify: we do not act recklessly. We first establish clear rules, assess the site, and address the impact on citizens. Only then do we begin delivering excavation equipment."
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei affirmed that in the process of constructing the Funan Techo Canal, the Royal Government has meticulously studied the impact on citizens living near the construction site. The government places great importance on ensuring both ethical responsibility and careful attention to their well-being.
On the occasion, the premier noted that the expert team has clearly identified solutions, including selecting alternative sites to avoid affecting ancient locations.
