Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 24 – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen affirmed that the Khmer Rouge trials confirmed the reality of the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen spoke on Sunday (Nov. 24) during the opening of the 11th Plenary Session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underscored, "The Khmer Rouge trials mean Cambodia had a genocidal regime, and thus the Khmer Rouge were prosecuted."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also addressed the superpowers, urging them not to apply a "1-1 equals 0" formula, which he explained as condemning both the perpetrators of the Khmer Rouge regime and the regime itself without distinction.

Samdech Techo also reminded the world of Cambodia's painful past, stating that despite the passage of time, the country must never forget the suffering endured and must continue to remind others of its tragic history.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that after the withdrawal of Vietnamese troops from Cambodia, he gave greater priority to peace talks, highlighting Cambodia's commitment to peace and reconciliation.

It should be noted that Cambodia endured the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime for three years, eight months, and 20 days after the Khmer Rouge overthrew the Lon Nol government on 17 April 1975. The regime, known for its killing fields, resulted in the deaths of nearly 3 million innocent people.

On 7 January 1979, the remaining Cambodian citizens were liberated. The Khmer Rouge leadership was later prosecuted by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, a hybrid court established by Cambodia and the United Nations.
